A Dependent Child is a child (by birth or adoption) who is single and whose parent is lawfully and permanently in New Zealand. They must be:
- Aged 17 or under OR
- Aged 18 – 20, but with no children of their own OR
- Aged 21 – 25, has no children of their own and relies totally or substantially on the parent for financial support.
For children under the age of 16 where the parents are separated or divorced the parent who is in New Zealand must produce evidence that they have the legal right to remove the dependent child from the child’s country of residence.
